Personal experience is the guidance of this research topic, because my experience showed the importance of the parent-child relationship from the sibling perspective biologically and through the adoption process. Through this experience the importance of the valence of the adjustment to be positive was seen, because children going through the adoption process are usually unstable and looking for stability. Relational maintenance behaviors such as positivity, openness, assurances, networks, shared tasks, and conflict management could be used in order to assist in the adjustment. Therefore, I am arguing that further research must be done to examine the relational maintenance behaviors that can be acted upon in order to make the adjustment of adoption positive for both parent and child. This research seeks to add knowledge about the difference of relational maintenance behaviors used between adopted the adopted child and parents. Among the many different types of relationships that exist, parent-child relationships are worth studying.
